HISTORY OF THE ANARCHIST
The Anarchist character was
created back when I was a sophomore in High
School in 1997. Back then I did single panel
comics called "CENSORED" like the one you see here. The Anarchist's
character was one that I have always enjoyed drawing
and in August of 1999, when I was asked by the "Arkansas
Traveler" to write a comic strip once a week,
The Anarchist immediately came to mind. It just
seemed right to name the comic after this character
even though the more I drew the comic the less
it had to do with The Anarchist at all and the more
it had to do with the lives of Darrek (The Anarchist's
nephew) and his best friend Donger. Donger is by far
the oldest character in the strip. I can actually trace
his hair style back to stick figures I drew in fourth
grade, although his character didn't really reach a
sense of solid form until closer to the sixth or seventh
grade. You could say I've been creating The Anarchist
since I first started drawing; even though the actual
comic was created on the way from the office of the "Traveler"
down to my car (which was a good 10 or 15 minute walk).
In a way, The Anarchist is like a journal of my life, with
few exaggerations here or there. The comic started out in 1999
as a once a week comic. In 2000 it went to two times a week,
and 2001 it went to three times and then four times a week. I ended
The Anarchist in spring of 2003, much because, in reflection of my
life, a period of my life has passed. Don't think I'm finished
with the characters from The Anarchist, however. So much so that they
were such a large part of my life, I still think about new comics
featuring the antics of Darrek and Donger. For now though, I've
decided to take a break from the realm of The Anarchist to work
on another comic I've recently fell in love with. God the Devil and a Monkey. |
